Working in a financial institute was not easy but i found out that the role of public relations is the same as in any other company. A Public relations officer is responsible for managing good communication between employees amongst other things. In Southern Cross for example they used electronic (emails), print (memos, brochures, newsletters and magazines) and face to face to pass information amongst each other. With the help of the public relations department all the employees made a personal outlook account in which all the vital and important information is communicated via within the office. The internal communication also includes meetings and board meetings, these is a good thing because all these ways of communication encourage a two way symmetrical communication between the employees and the employer
According to my supervisor another role of a pr is to come up with a crisis management plan and to be in charge of the crisis management plan. Crisis communication is a primordial tool of the Public relation profession designed to protect and defend an individual, company, or organization facing a public challenge to its reputation this means you should know how to handle the community and the media in terms of a crisis. This includes getting the messages and context to the media and identifying and recruiting credible third party allies who can attest to the company’s side of the story and being able to strike first, not waiting to be hit.
These two are among the many roles of pr in a company , pr can also be used to help organisations achieve their strategic goals and also to build and maintain relationships between the key publics and the organisation. this shows that pr is a vital tool in any company.
