cbsplus has three major communication channels to send their messages, such as newsletters, social network(Facebook) and member’s networking. The newsletter is released in a regular basis, and the networking is depending on the member’s relationship with their friends. I was assigned to develop cbsplus’ Facebook.
I spent long time on facebook developing project. While doing research, I found that there were more than 10 cbsplus pages in Facebook. However not every pages are well-managed, as some of the page administrators left cbsplus, and we could not access to these old pages.
After much consideration, we decided to develop the page with the most members. This is to avoid confusion in which one is up-to-date and official. Then we rename the chosen one as “cbsplus Official Group”.
Because the pages were abandoned for some time, there were little or no awareness in the public. Therefore our team planned to upload all the photos taken from past events to the group page and tag people on the photos to generate awareness. However, the first challenge that we face was there were huge amount of photos and there were all over the place, no one had arrange them for the past 10 years.
During the Easter break, I spend 3 days working on those photos. I set up a photo system for cbsplus, there are more than 6,000 photos to be uploaded to the page. I thought it would be much easier to upload the photos after arranging them according to date and events, but another challenge came in.
Facebook group page does not provide the photo album system as our personal Facebook page. Although I can still upload about 6,000 photos on our official group page, but they won’t be as arranged and in order like a photo album. Well, it was a painful experience as we couldn’t create a new group page and invite current members to join, then we couldn’t upload 6,000 photos without albums.
After much struggle, I decided to create an account in photo websites, to display the photos to cbsplus members and public. Those two websites does not have link to each other, so we had to notify members and public with a note in Facebook page.
However, I am also aware that once the administrators left the cbsplus, the current cbsplus management team member will not be able to log in those two official pages. So in the end, we could not manage the group page.
I created a Facebook backup account and user handbook for every member. The guideline shows different steps to manage the cbsplus official page for non-administrators, such as how to promote an event, upload photos and some other functions of Facebook that might be useful for the group page.
In a nutshell, the overall effort is to manage and maintain a consistent communication channel in cbsplus. It will not only allow future members to be able to continue the development, cbsplus will benefit with more effective awareness and reaching the targeted audience.
