COMMUNICATION IN PR

One of the most important tools in an organisation is communication. Even us as human beings we can’t live without communication, we talk to each other in order to get directions, inform others as well sharing ideas. In PR communication is the most essential tool as it is used to share information with clients.

According to one of the pioneers of Public relations Grunigs, communication should be two way, benefiting both the key publics and the organization.

While most of the organization adopt asymmetrical model of communication whereby there is no win-win situation and the information flows from the organization only, at pdq employees are efficiently maintaining a good symmetrical level of communication by utilizing new media to allow the opinions of the key publics. They have currently opened a facebook fan page.

Not only is PDQ concerned about the level of communication with the external key publics they also strive to keep good internal relations with their employees by having regular meetings within the organization. Likewise new media is playing a crucial role to deliver the messages quickly within the organization, the use of new technology to disseminate information easier and quickly. It is the best way to build and sustain long-lasting, mutually beneficial relationships between an organization and its clients.

According to Cutlip (1985) meetings bring people together, providing both opportunities to speak and opportunities to listen two-way communication. Work group meetings, quality control circles and participative management sessions are examples of small task oriented meetings being used with increased frequency. Such face- to- face get together are expensive in time away from routine tasks, but economical in the long run in both ideas they produce and the team building effects.

This is my last post, to my fellow future PR practitioners it was great sharing experiences with you and I learnt a lot from you guys. Till we meet again in the industry.

Thank you.

Greetings, I agree with you Olebogeng, Communication is the most important aspect. It is the foundation of every relationship and for an organization to function well, it has to communicate well with its employees and clients. Failure to communicate can result in misunderstandings and/or conflicts, poor performance and low staff morale. So, every organization has to ensure that there is a flow of communication in the company. I say, we are blessed because of new technologies which make communication easier; we have intranets, e-mails and the list goes on and on.

hey Lebo,
intersting points you have cited out, adding on to what you had said, PDQ is a relatively small agency which is advantageous as internal communication is effective betwen the staff. he management is able to build a close relation with its members through knowing them individually as they work cosely from time to time. this makes it easier to now who does wat, when and how. image if the agency had poor communication skills, order could not be managed making as a result their external publics would had been affected

Hi Gorata and Moratiwa
Yes, indeed communication is the best thing within the organization. As for now even the employees are so close to each other. It has to begin within the organization to avoid conflicts, that's when they can extend it to their clients to have a good reputation.

Thanks for sharing your observations as well.
