Hey everyone,
So this is my first official blog of my placement and to tell you the truth I have been putting it off. My name is Stefan Manuk and I am completing my PR393 placement at HWE Mining in the communications department. Although this is my second week working here it’s not the first time I have done work experience for this company. My previous work experience here was more of a logistics role in which I helped scheme and initiate the strategy of distributing all the contractors Christmas Presents for 2010.
The current position I now uphold is a more “white collar” position, the team I work with is the Communications division At HWE mining that is in charge of all communication projects and initiatives for mining sites Area C, Yandi, Orebody 23/25 and of course their office here in Osborne Park.
My understanding of HWE
HWE mining was previously called Henry Walker Eltin’s Mining until 2006 when his assets were acquired by Leighton Contractors. Now HWE is a part of Leighton Contractors Division, in which their major client is BHP Billiton. HWE employ all the contractors necessary to run the mine sites as BHP isn’t big enough to have their own machinery/operators. Leighton Holdings operate in over 30 countries with their main emphasis on iron ore mining.
The Work
My first day saw me re-introduced to the team with some familiar faces and new, I was shown around the office and then it was straight into work. My first job was to go onto the Social Networking site LinkedIn and audit all employees’ names that were on the site. With over 10,000 employees it was interesting to see that only 187 employees utilised the benefits of LinkedIn, in which majority of them where supervisors at the Osborne Park office and superintendents up at mine sites. I was then given a list of all the team leaders, superintendents and bosses that should have linked in and again the results were interesting as only a few actually used LinkedIn. From this I then had to write up a brief on how to use LinkedIn and the benefits derived from using Linked. Sara, the communications advisor told me how HWE is trying to implement LinkedIn as a method for blogging, understanding workers feelings and job announcements.
My second job was to write newsletter articles for Unearthed (quarterly book) the story required me to call supervisors and interview people to gain knowledge about a worker who has been with the company for a substantial time. My next job required me to pull information of a website that HWE sponsor called Mining Family Matters. This is a mining website that offers help to miners facing all issues under the sun and gives professional help and advice. My third job was to write a people profile about a worker on site that would also be published in the upcoming newsletter.
As many of you might know NAIDOC week just passed and HWE celebrated the week’s events through all mine sites including special visits from David Wirrpanda, flag raising ceremonies and BQQ’s amongst all sites. This led me to my fourth job of writing another feature article in their monthly newsletter which spoke about NAIDOC week. The article included information about the David Wirrpanda foundation – Dare to Dream and summarised the week’s events.
I have written a further two more articles which will appear on the website as a profile about the employees and been included in a meeting with a lady from Red Balloon. I look forward to all the jobs to come such as going up to site to experience another aspect of the Communications team and the roll out of their new employee recognition scheme.

This sounds like such a great opportunity Stefan! It's always good to do your placement at somewhere you are familiar with and interested in.
Looks like your company is happy for you to take on some pretty big tasks which is fantastic for your experience, it's also great that you do get some variety in your role also.

This sounds like an amazing opportunity and one that would/could definitely set you up with some crucial contacts for the coming years. Mining is such a diverse field nowadays and all encompassing so this sounds like it would be both a rewarding placement. It also gives you an important look into a world that so many Australians work in and that many more spend their entire lives trying to break into.

I think this is a perfect example of how much more you learn in the real world. Little things mean so much more because you realise that it actually is being used by your organisation and they WANT your help and input. Sounds like you're doing a great job and getting some really cool experience already!
