PRO & Journalists a mutual relationship
Like i mentioned in my first blog i did my internship at Salina and Associates Pr. which is a Public Relations consultancy run by intellectual females, I observed quite a number of things one of them being the relationship between the consultants and the journalists. This made me ask myself if PRO's really need journalists for the success of their clients getting good coverage and publicity from the media, well the answer is a big YES! what I observed in Salina and Associates was that journalist were treated like royals for example during the events they were given first priority reason being that if they were not treated with so much respect they may take their time in covering the story or even worse not covering the story at all. The other thing I observed is that they (journalists) were given token of appreciation/gifts when the event ends and with time they would also get another gift as a way of creating good relations and for making them come for future events. The conclusion I have drawn is that journalists get so much respect from PRO's and in return give good coverage for their clients with this there is mutual understanding and relationship.

I completely agree with what you have discussed above.Journalists play a very vital role in the public relations industry in order for public relations to get good publicity. The public relations industry cant survive without media because it relies on the media to disseminate information at all times.
It must be important for Journalist to disseminate information, they should do that without being given some mini packages so that they cover the important information. So that token of appreciation is considered to be bribery. So iam against the way your consultancy runs things
helo everyone
i choose to go with Keletso
what this company is doing is UNETHICAL or maybe u didn't put it correctly. It sounds like a bribery.
One thing that is still confusing me is PR PROS pampering the media unnecessarily. Most of the companies are giving away endless gifts to the media thinking that the media will write their stories respectively. Sometimes, the gifts would be far more expensive and I have heard that so many journalists attend events just for gifts. what happened to professionalism? Sometimes journalists give phone calls and ask for gifts without attending the event. In Joi’sh Concepts they never give gifts to the media. Token of appreciation are given to the companies who are sponsoring the events and people with high positions.
The issue of PR PROS giving away gifts to journalists has been discussed to the highest level in PR profession from time to time.
PR PROS SHOULD NOT BRIBE THE MEDIA TO COVER THEIR STORY
looking foward to hear from you once again Boago
stay blessd you all
This is a very interesting insight into the 'real world' and I think these are things that we all have to be aware of. In class we are told what to do and what not to do but it is not how it may work in the outside world. i think we will all come across things we find challenging to our ethical standards and morals. i am a Jounralism/PR student so it is very interesting to see this dynamic at play between the 2 professional fields. In both areas of study we are taught to always act ethically, to never take kick backs as a Journo. and to never offer kick backs as a PR pro. In my placement the media were not treated like royals, like you have said, (great way to put it!). The PR team have established realtionships with Journo's and they are mutually helpful so as to get a job done. I think credibility would be lost by either side were 'gifts' offered or expected.
Good luck with your future and i hope the rest of you internship went along without TOO much controversy.
