Motivation ups and downs.

It been more than 10 days now since i have started to work at Odysseus PR. At first, i was really enjoying my internship as i have had the opportunity to give proposals for an eventual client of the organisation. I was called in the office of the Events manager and she explained to me what the client was expecting of them. There were not much details. Only that the company was celebrating its 50th anniversary and that they wanted Odysseus to propose some PR ideas for their event and coincide it with their anniversary to come. Moreover, the events manager asked me to find some ideas to propose along with the PR side, a bit of events that could be interesting to implement into their anniversary. I did not know how to call that but i will call it a pitch.

So, some time later, i started to search and search and search for campaigns that could be implemented within a company's anniversary. I was thinking of something big and visible that could blast people's mind. But it seemed to be too much and costly. Then i propose something smaller and i thought that a company's anniversary would be more convenient to an advertising company. I definitely could not stick to that and i decided to find a very interesting and creative way to promote the company's 50th anniversary. I took all my time into research and i suddenly got the idea of doing a narration of all the years the company existed in a PR form. I did a presentation that will be in my report. But after all my dedication to make something good, the Events manager told me that the company, never called them back. And all the time i had spent was unnecessary.

I have learned that even if i am much dedicated to do things well, everyone will not see them as i do.

I only hope it gets better soon.

Hi Angie,

I hope you're not too disheartened by this experience! It sounds like you've really been thrown in the deep end and you appear to be handling it with a lot of courage and motivation which I really admire.

One thing I've noticed in my internship is that new ideas, which are sometimes costly and time consuming, aren't always as well received as they are at university. We are encouraged to be very creative in our degree, but I think in reality, unfortunately, recycled ideas often win.

I'm not suggesting that you stop with these suggestions at all; I think someday this firm will need a fresh idea. Perhaps you could try and ease new ideas into existing ones. For example, if the firm held a formal dinner for each anniversary they had, you could suggest they include an interesting presentation during the event. This way they don't feel too overwhelmed by the idea, and it is likely to cost them less too. Eventually over time they may be more accepting of your suggestions!

Take care,
Jessie

Hi Jessica, i am really glad to read your comment. First of all thank you for the response to my post. You are sooo true when you say that what we learn at university is not well received by the employer.
I believe that we should adapt to the working environment cause we would not be able to give our opinion until we have proved our competency.
I really appreciate your comment.

Thanks again Jessica. Good luck for your future report.
