I'm sure like many of you, when I first started
looking for an internship, I found myself worried about whether I was ready to
put my skills and knowledge into practice in the ‘real’ world. Was I ready? Did
I know enough? Will I do well?
Now, nearing the end of my internship at
Momentum Forum Events I have found that I really had nothing to worry about.
The start is only scary because you don’t know what to expect. Interning at
Momentum has allowed me to work one-to-one with the CEO and Founder Barbara
McNaught, an opportunity that has let me see all aspects of the company. I have
tried my hand at many different PR tactics from writing media releases,
newsletters, running sheets and sponsorship proposals to maintaining websites
and social media to sharing my opinion on strategic aspects of the company.
Most importantly, what I have learnt at
university has been reinforced. It was reassuring to find that all of the
techniques used in class and when completing assignments are the same as those
used in the field. Both the units studied and my internship have really
prepared me for the PR industry.
I have learnt so much from my internship,
not just about how PR is practiced but a lot about how I work. I now feel fully confident and prepared to step out into the ‘real’
world and into a PR role.
I hope everyone’s internships went well!

Hi Kiara,
After reading your blog, it's reassuring to know that I wasn't alone in the self-doubt department prior to engaging in my internship. Putting into practice the learning outcomes of our units in the workplace is daunting, but a great way to be affirmed of the knowledge that we have acquired!
It sounds like you were provided with the opportunity to work on a wide range of PR activities- how fantastic! Working alongside the CEO would have been great, she would have been able to provide you with invaluable insight into the industry.
Thank you for sharing!
Carmen
Hi Kiara,
Reading your blog post made me think of myself and the concerns I had at the beginning of the semester. I guess we are scared about finally entering the real world of PR. But it worked out great for all of us!
Just like you, I have been able to reinforce my knowledge of what I have learned in class during my internship.
Thank you for your post
