Persistent media calling - tangible success!

During the time I have been completing my internship in Kuala Lumpur it is also the religious time of Ramadan - a 30 day period where Muslims fast during daylight hours.

To celebrate this time, one of our clients, Quill City Mall, launched a Ramadan and Hari Raya campaign that saw the mall transformed into a nostalgic mix of a traditional Kuala Lumpur in the 1980’s. The official launch was held on a Thursday evening. 40 school-aged children from a local orphanage were invited to a shopping excursion, cultural performance and buka pasa (breaking fast) meal.

We sent a media invitation and fact sheet to a wide range of daily newspapers, online news portals and well-known bloggers. I was given the invitation list and instructed to follow up with the media and compile the final attendance list.

I spent many days persistently following up with the media which was quite an extensive process during this busy time of the year. Getting through to the right department, speaking to the correct person, calling back at a different time/day, not to mention the language barrier (Kuala Lumpur has many media outlets in English, Malay and Chinese).

The night of the event came and I attended with my supervisor, assisted packing the media goody bags and greeted and signed the media in as they arrived. The media turnout was quite good considering the number of other Ramadan events on that evening and was great to see the resulting media coverage in the days following. Of this media coverage included a full page editorial in The Star (a national Malaysian newspaper written in English with a circulation of over 290, 000).

I enjoyed being part of the whole process from start to finish and seeing how the different components of communications and events work together to gain public awareness. Liaising with different types of media using a range of communication channels (email, telephone and in-person) also allowed me to develop my confidence.
