Last week I started my placement for Public Relations at the Perth Motorplex, which has been a whirlwind of learning and amazing experiences so far.
I was so nervous walking in on my first day, with lots of thought going through my head - which I'm sure has crossed a lot of other people's minds as well. What if I completely stuff up? What if I can't do something? What if they don't like me? But all that worrying was for nothing! As soon as I walked in, my supervisor Daniel, introduced me to everyone in the office and I was greeted with warm 'hello's,' and big smiles which instantly made me feel 100% more comfortable.
Being at the Motorplex, I was so excited to get started! Growing up around cars and rev heads, I know a little, but not much. I always was around my brother and his mates during my high school years while they worked on their cars and went to meet-ups... but this, this was a whole new ball game.
I got to work and since that first day I have done so much! I've been constantly working on a PR Plan for Motorvation 30, I've liaised with promo agencies to book promo girls, and I have been working on all different documents that go together in a media kit that is sent out to Traders for Motorvation 30.
While all this has been insane and so much work so far, I have learnt from the guys in the office that it's okay to make mistakes. One of the girls in the office, Jade, notices how stressed I get but she helps me along the way. I don't have my trouble with the work, but I just an intern - I am here to learn. This is the real world, and not a class room, but in essence I am still a student and I am here to learn from real world experiences and mistakes.
So far I haven't made any mistakes and I still am worried for that day to come, but I know that's just bound to happen and it's okay because I have people here to help me along the way.
Also, I'm having fun! That's also what this experience is about! My supervisor took me for a drive around the track and every here is always laughing and smiling and not so dead set serious, which makes the office environment much funner and uplifting.
So here I go, onto my second week to have another week of fun!
Welcome to PR Internship - YOUR opportunity to put everything you have learned over the past years at university into practice and to get a thorough insight into what public relations is like "in the real world". This Blog allows you to reflect on your experiences, share insights with other students across campuses and to possibly give advice and support to fellow students. Please also see http://http://printernship-reflections2.blogspot.com.au/ for more reflections.

Hey Tass,
Glad to hear your first week is going well! I am curious to know if the place you work at is particularly male dominated consider its the motorplex. Reason being that the field of PR is normally quite female dominated, therefore making it quite an interesting environment to be conducting PR in. I hope the rest of the internship goes well for you.
